The Law of Jante (Jantelagen) is an unwritten social rule in Scandinavia that promotes collective humility and equality over individualism and personal success. It dictates that you should not think you are better, smarter, or more important than anyone else.
Only by leaving Sweden did I fully grasp the drawbacks and benefits of growing up under this kind of mind-set. How it stifles self-expression and breeds conformity. How it promotes equality and a humle approach to the self and others. How it both plays on the strings of our melancholic nature as well as enhance our awareness of our surroundings.
In this series I’m depicting Swedish people corresponding to the idea of Jante as well as moments of breaking free from the same concepts.
